Equal Rites   by Terry Pratchett

It's lucky for all of us that Terry Pratchett didn't insist on following the same storyline, or keeping the same cast of characters he had in the first two books. This book introduces a new-born eigth son of an eigth son - a wizard - except that someone belatedly notices that it is, in fact, a girl.

Well, she grows up, develops so magical ability, and then wants to go to unseen university... oh dear!

The book continues with the same thick hilarity as the previous two, and like the others this does get a bit overwhelming, even tedious, after a while.
